Humidity is part of the moisture-retention balancing act. Roots take it in, metabolic processes and warmth drive it out. The higher the humidity, the less driving force for loss through the leaves, reducing the stress on the plant. Some plants - notably phals - have evolved leaf structures to limit losses, others have not, so the maintenance of high humidity is essential to their survival.
