I agree with both Ray and Harry about using a fertilezer program that provides the balance that the plants need. One aspect of that is, as Harry indicates, balancing the pH for your conditions. Your choice of medium and it's age can play a part in what pH range is actually at the root zone. Some (spaghnum as an example) can be more acidic so a higher fertilizer pH may be helpfull. As organic mediums break down they tend to be more acidic so the age of the medium also plays a part. Semi hydro in an inert medium overcomes the breakdown issue, and relys on good flushing and the pH of the fert to maintain proper pH and concentration of nutrients. Using limestone or oyster shell as part of an organic medium helps keep the pH up if it is appropriate for your varieties of plants. All of this is part of choice that a grower must make to provide optimum conditions in their situation.
