waterlogged and abused phal!!!
Unhappy waterlogged and abused phal!!!

we got our mum a orchid for christmas, its a dendrobium phalenopsis.... but it was in some kind of plastic pot inside the other pot so it was collecting water around the roots. We discovered this problem after all the flowers and leaves fell off and we decided to take it out the pot. we have taken it out that plastic and took all the water logged medium away from the roots. The roots are badly rotten and we have trimmed the very bad ones off.

Its in correct medium now, i was just wondering if there is anything else i can do and what are the chances that it makes it?

Hi Chantelle,

You did the right thing to cut off the rotten roots, your messages seems to imply you have SOME good roots and that's a good thing.

You do not say what medium you have now put it in, have you changed it from what it was in or put it back in the same, what is that... moss, bark or...?

Also a picture is likely to help, did you take any pictures of what is left of the roots while you were repotting?

Just a quick note as well, a Dendrobium phalenopsis is not the same thing as Phal(aenopsis). Both Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis are different genuses of Orchid while Dendrobium phalenopsis (note the lower case p) is a species of Dendrobium.

Your orchid is most likely a hybrid of Den phalaenopsis, I have several of those, although it is possible it's the actual species.

I would keep it warm and wait for the medium to dry out slightly before watering it again, keep it in bright but diffuse light and hope!

waterlogged and abused phal!!!
Default medium of growth

it was in some kind of moss but it was very wet. i have removed all of that and it is now in some kind of lava rock stuff that came in the pot aswell, im not sure why they had it in a small pot within a pot... the little pot was full of wet moss and around was lava rock...

is that alright?

Hi Chantelle,

I've not grown in larva rock but I believe some people do. It might be a massive change of enviroment for the remaining roots and you will have to make sure they do not dry too much in rock?

Can you show us a pick of the pot/larva rock.
