WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Hi peeps,
I ordered the following orchid from SBOE:
Laelia anceps var. alba 'Silver Medal', SM/MOS at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate
Now, when the staff emailed me to confirm the order, the employee informed me that this Laelia is now named:
L. anceps v. alba 'Sterling Dickenson' SM/MOS
Can someone verify this?
I want the plant but I want the Silver Medal. I want to make sure what I'm getting before I shell out the $$.
Thanks peeps!
M~

SM in the award designation stands for silver medal. 'Silver Medal' may have been used as a placeholder name until a clonal name was selected, or perhaps 'Silver Medal' had already been used for another plant forcing a change. I don't know if either of these are actually the case, but with a reputable company like SBOE I would accept the name change and the assurance I was getting the plant I paid for.

After a little bit of digging on Google and OrchidWiz, it appears that MOS refers to Maribyrnong Orchid Society in Australia, as they apparently give society medals at their shows.
OrchidWiz does not have that award in their list for Laelia anceps, BUT, it appears SBOE got an 80-point AM/AOS on that cultivar in 1989.

I would ask SBOE why the name change.

Got my orchid today!!! It's fantastically healthy and it has 1 new growth and 2 developing eyes.
It's got the tag with a notation of the virus test results.

Is this for the L. anceps (intermediate) project? I visited SBOE over the holidays and all their L. anceps (and others) were in full bloom. I just fell in .
