You was right. That plant died very quickly.

I’m wondering if substrate preference is tied to growing conditions. I’ve had great success with Phals, but I killed one Sedirea grown indoors in medium bark and killed all the in pot roots on a second. I moved the second one outside to a vanda basket with loosely packed sphagnum and its roots are growing again and it’s in spike. It does dry rapidly in this set up. Same light conditions as indoors but it is cooler with a lot more air movement and better humidity.

I don't think it is a "media preference" (there are times when I type advice where it sounds like it, but it is just a way for the advice to be kept "simple"). To be more specific, it is more of a preference of chemistry (I'm speaking in general terms here). Stuff like acceptable pH ranges, the amount of gas to water ratio, too much water, not enough water, lighting intensity, things like this. A plant does not sense the world the same way we do, it does not know the difference between cork bark and fir bark (kind of, sort of), and consciously choose cork over fir bark. It just knows that chemically everything is perfect for it to make do. I don't know if this makes sense.

It is not so much the material itself that matters - it is the properties of those materials that matters more.

Thank you very much I grew my green 'Minimaru' on a wide thin bubble of moss. Moss become dry quickly after sprinkled. I really like the view of the moss hummock. I'll try to grow 'shima' on spherical mesh with thin 1 or 2 long sphagnum fiber layer.

Maybe a year late on this one. I've never grown these before. Hard to say what happened there alice.

I just ordered a couple (near flowering size) ----- incoming, and will be growing them in scoria, the same way as with my phal, phrags, paphs, and psychopsis. Hopefully does ok in our tropical conditions!

Apparently they're from sub-tropical regions.
