Preparing sphagnum moss
Default Preparing sphagnum moss

so I just picked up a brick of Super Moss's "Mountain Moss, Natrual Green Sphagnum" and I'm wondering how I need to go about preparing it for use? I'm going to use it as a top dressing of s/h to help new root growths roots acclimate and keep the top level of PA moist. I currently have it soaking in water, and the water is a little yellow... kinda like when I soak coconut chips. Is salt coming out of the moss?

Should be fine to use right away, I don't soak mine and there should be no salt in the moss.

I just wet it and put the plants in. I don't think any special preparation is really necessary but soaking it can't hurt.

thanks, guys. i actually just finished repotting, with the sphagnum moss now around just the base of the plant. it's actually kinda cute looking. anyway, i hope this helps the new root growths stay healthy until they reach the PA.

If you want to avoid a green sludge forming on the surface of the pot you can put small pebbles across the surface. It makes it look a bit better.

Bolero, I like your suggestion and will try it. I mulch all of my cacti with gravel of different types that not only looks nice but it also keeps the soil from splashing onto the plant when watering and prevents bacteria from getting on the plant. I don't know why I did not think of doing the same thing with my orchids in semi-hydro.
Thanks!
