I'd treat it like a reed stem Epidendrum that threw out a kheiki...

Leave it on. When it's truly big enough, it'll easily peel off witout any damage. Just be mindful of the aerial roots. They can dry out quickly if the humidity is low. I misted the aerial roots on a reed stem Epi NOID kheiki I'm growing while it was on the mother plant to make sure the roots were good by the time it was ready to be removed.

Epc's have Epidendrums in them, so...there you go.
