If you're growing it right, there should be minimal problems with pests.
I've never grown this species, but it sounds like it's not that hard to grow.
From what I see, it's an intermediate to warm growing epiphyte of deciduous forests. Which means it gets a dry period. According to Jay Pfhal's site, it's winter dormant.
People who may be using that saying are probably watering it year round when they're not supposed to, I guess...
