Coconut husk fiber

Anybody using this as a growing medium? Not the chunks, but the shredded stuff. I bought a few mounted 'chids that had coconut husk fiber around the roots, and wound up replacing it with sphag because it dried out way too quickly under lights/fans. I was just wondering if it might perform differently inside a pot.

I have small Vandas in a basket and Oncidium in ceramic and plastic pots and a Cattleya in a ceramic pot all with just coconut fiber. but I would not use it on a mount because as you said it dose not hold water that well.

Cumbidium seedlings and Paphs (some paphs) like Shredded coconut fiber mixed with fine (3//8 stalite).
I bought a blender at a yeard sale. I put in a One cupfull of "Coconut Husk Chips" and a teaspoon of dolomite lime and water (Full). Turn the blender on to the grind setting and you have nice fiber in about 1 minute. Drain off the water and mix with the stalite. Note: dont put the rocks or too much CHC in the blender or the blender will send smoke signals

Do you thing a blender or a coffee grinder could work with bark? The better gro I have is a little to chuncky for small plants

Um, you guys talking about blending your media, in the literal sense reminded me of this guy. These are industrial blenders, so the rocks wouldn't be an issue. He's blended iPods, wire,....I can't remember all of the things he has stuck in this blender. It always made me laugh, though. Oh, he blended an entire plate of a Thanksgiving meal...mmmm Okay, enough on this.

I have found the best use of the fiber is support of smaller plants, like tolumnias, in their baskets. They don't tend to need a lot of water in my area of the world.
