Well, this post has been a great review of all the ways people use and think about to label their plants. Very interesting.
I don't mean to belabor this, but the labels I use have been fantastic. NO cracking or brittleness, NO fading, NO color loss, NO print degradation, NONE!
here are some pictures of a label that has been in this plant/pot for seven years (and I have some up to 10 years) in the greenhouse. The label stakes are $5 per 100 from CalWest (other sources may have them too). are I also pictured the label maker I use (it's a Brady ID PAL, and pretty easy to locate). It costs around $100, but since I bought it my wife and I have found many "needs" for labels around the house, kitchen, shop, etc. It runs off batteries or standard 110v (in the USA) household current. The vinyl label tape for it is kind of pricey (about $20 per roll) but how much you get from a roll will depend on how you use it. For my mounted plants, I punch a small hole in the "end" of the tag and wire it to the mount in an unobtrusive spot.
I have also used it outdoors with the same results . . . and anything that can stand up to the Arizona sun for more than a couple of years is probably indestructible.
fyi, the plant is a Bpl. Golden Spice 'Hot Peppers' (Bpl. = Brassavola (now Ryncholaelia) x Epidendrum x Laelia.
You'd think I get a commission on these, but I have just found this system to be the best labelling method for orchids and with a lot of "general utility" for other labelling.

Our local (not a chain) farm and garden store has aluminum tags, about 1x3, with wires to attach them. Box of 50 is around $6. Combined with a P-touch clear label, the ID is indestructible, won't fade or peel off. Tags can be re-used with a new label. Package suggests writing on the tag, but that seems like a bad idea when some plants will be divided or (not mine, of course) lose their will to live.
And in our hurricane-prone area, it is *very* good to have the label attached to the plant, not the pot or the hanger.
They are "Cole's Aluminum Identification Markers" manufactured for L&L Nursery Supplies, Chino, CA,

I'm having a problem with my labels, they are disappearing outside. My kids swear that they didn't take them, my dog would bark if someone came near the yard. I must have POed a Garden Fairy. I would really like them back though

When my kids were in their baseball/softball phases, I was often presented with several piles - one of foliage, the other of broken crockery. It isn't just hurricanes that separate a tag from its plant. The hurricanes break fewer pots, though...

Thanks for sharing all of your labeling ideas. I actually contacted someone @ the ceramic league of miami to make me some tags made out of clay. She is going to put a color glaze on one side and leave the clay naked on the other side for me to stick a label on. It's going to cost me 50 bucks for 100 tags--I didn't think it's a bad price. They are 7 inches x 2 inches wide, with a hole to hang the label. I am hoping this will work out.
She also makes pottery so if she does a good job, she is going to do lots of custom pots for me.
