Aluminumumum? Any more, I can't even say it, let alone spell it!! Just a note. I use vinyl labels that have, or will have in any case, at one end. I agree with Ray that jamming the label down into the pot will prevent the UV damage, but even that does not prevent other orchid enthusiast from picking the label out of the pot. I use twist tie and FIRMLY secure the tag to a pseudobulb or drilled hole at the top of the pot. I have found that even this isn't always a sure fire deterrent to keeping people from either making off with the tag or sticking it into another pot (usually at the far end of the greenhouse)!

I do the same thing as Gin. You can pick blinds up for a dime a dozen at thrift stores and they provide enough material to make a ton of recycled tags. I would be concerned about the slate getting knocked out and broken by foraging critters. This wouldn't be a problem if the Chids were grown indoors though.

I have used the blinds also. I will print out the information I want on the tag on a clear 1" x 2-5/8" Avery label on my ink-jet printer and then spray it with a clear spray. (Hair spray, Clear spray paint, Spray varnish) or something similar and they last for years.

I came across Dupont tyvek paper. I think it could be a good substitute for plant label. The feel is very paper-like but almost impossible to tear and water-proof.

Too bad it's not easy to find one in my area.

the problem with all tags is not the material s much as the ink fading in the UV.

Pencil still lasts the longest about 2 years.
