For some reason, what I've read about this is you should only use the original (brown) Listerine, not the minty stuff.
I buy whatever store-brand I find. There's no reason to buy the brand name on this one.

Somebody here on OB (sorry, don't remember who it was) experimented with the minty stuff and had nothing bad to report. I tried it too and it was fine but I tend to stick with the original

Thanks for posting this question. I have a couple with the same problem. I've been using Listerine since I first heard of it from Sue and it does work. I have a mounted catt that got snow mold and it took two dose's but it cured it. Although I didn't know to take it from the light. What's the thought behind lowering the light.

I guess it's just a habit I've fallen into. I don't like to have anything but pure water on the chids when they're in the sun here. There's alcohol in Listerine.
If you haven't seen any problems, that's good!

Here in the UK I don't think there is a brown listerine. I use the green one which is NOT minty it says 'original' on the bottle.

I just add this note for those who are not in the US because I think the colours are different in Europe.

What fertilizer are you using and how much. Also what is its nitrogen content ?
Are you flushing the media regularly ,some plants are more salt sensitive than others Do you know how to do a pull through test to check for high salt contamination or high Ph within the pot ?
I think you may find that it is either high EC or PH within the pot . The next to suffer will be the plants root system .
Move the plant into a wood basket or mount it, this might solve the problem
I have also seen this on plants grown in metal baskets made from wire mesh the heavy metals contaminate the plant .

Hi Des,
this was a brand new plant that was sent to me bare root, so I didnt have enough time to damage it within 24 hours.. you know?

I think its heat damage and serious fungal attack and I WISH I would have had sue's words in hand when i was potting this baby!

I ended up hacking all the blackening parts that are spreading and using thiomyl at 3tsp per gallon ran some in the medium to make sure the roots got some in the system and sprayed the leaves. I hope it will be okay, it looks quite ugly but if I can save the plant- it is worth it ...
but from here on out Ill get some listerine and keep it on hand how did you find out about listerine's magical properties sue

I got the original, which is brown. The green one is labelled as minty. I don't know why they would change the color from country to country. Are you sure you got the real authentic listerine?

I read about it somewhere online and it made sense to me.
I'm a big fan of experimenting to learn new ways of doing things so I tried it. I feel much better knowing that if the dogs happen to get their mouths on it, they won't be seriously hurt

...and it works great!

I agree with Sue. I always look for a store brand and find that the ingredients are exactly the same as with the "real" Listerine. I imagine that in Europe they have the same thing under other brand names and probably at a lower price. The basic ingredients are Eucalyptol, Menthol, Methyl Salicylate and Thymol mixed with alcohol, water, and some preservatives. Caramel gives it the brown colour.

I have found that putting a sick plant in lower light is good for it and encourages it to concentrate on producing roots rather then leaves. Think of a plant's leaves as the solar collectors for the plant. If there isn't as much sun you don't need as many solar collectors, instead you should produce extra roots which will gain more nutrients from the soil rather then the sun. Then once a good root system is in place the roots will be able to support and gather up enough water to fill out a larger system of leaves. In turn, more leaves and roots together will be able to supply enough energy for reproduction and the development of seedpods, which is what the purpose of flowers are. If a plant doesn't feel like it's healthy enough to carry lots of babies, it won't produce many flowers. We tend to think of flowers as the main event in a plant's life but flowers are really just the means to the actual main event of reproduction.
