I wonder what the ratio would be with regards to orchid wives / orchid husbands? It appears to me that there are an awful lot of orchid husbands about with their wives giving full support and appreciation.

My wife has hobbies - she has a farm with 75 chickens, 20+ fruit trees, 30+ Blueberry bushes, and a half-acre garden.
I have orchids.
I take care of my orchids and their needs and can buy whatever I can fit (e.g. cram ) into my orchid room........and for that opportunity, I help her take care of everything else!
Good deal. Win - Win.

I wonder if I can get my DH to read this thread . . . he needs some new ideas for showing his love & affection . . . actually, no, that's not true. I study, he cooks, I study, he does dishes, I study, he does laundry . . . and when I said I want to turn the 75-gallon aquarium a friend just gave us into an orchid & Phelsuma laticauda (Gold Dust Day Gecko) vivarium--with his help, of course, he just said, "OK."
A bit resigned, that OK, but it WAS an OK!!

As a woman I would say that sounds like a green light statement because she has resigned herself to it.
If it were me and it was going to be a red light statement I would say something along the lines of "I don't know but he better not buy any more orchids"
Cassia that sounds exactly like my relationship. My fiance and I live together and I go to school full time so he takes pity on me and does pretty much all of the dishes, laundry and vacuuming while I'm working on a constant and relentless stream of homework. He's not a very good cook though so I do end up cooking, but he cleans up!
My fiance doesn't give a hoot about orchids at all but is very supportive and even buys most of them for me. He even went to an orchid society meeting with me but decided afterward that it was probably the most boring evening he had spent in several years. I had to laugh because I rather enjoyed it. I told him it was fine and he didn't have to go to any more of them if he bought me a few more plants
My fiance' was a little more resistant when I told him I needed him to help me build some orchid benches for my patio. At least you got an "OK" right off the bat. I had to start the project myself and then finally when he saw me getting out his table saw he got scared and started to help me. I did have to do all the painting and staining myself but it was a fun project and came out well.

GREEN LIGHT! GREEN LIGHT!!!
When my hubby makes the mistake of a crack like that, I go orchid shopping and tell him it's HIS fault for putting the thought in my head!

I really like the projects that both of us work on. I like knowing that we have things we'll enjoy together. Otherwise, I'd be worried about retirement . . .

First I designed the 5 part bench set using a 3D modeling program and did a 3D to-scale mock up of my front porch with the finished bench set in place.
I wanted it to fit exactly onto my porch, making the best use of space and also easily movable in case of a hurricane so they can be brought inside.
We built the frames out of pressure treated 2x4s. We used anti-rust deck screws coated with wood glue to make it last. Then I painted the frames with two coats of high gloss white paint.
Next I stained the 1x2 slats, sanded them down and sealed them with several coats of spar urethane (which makes them water proof and very shiny! It's often used to paint wooden boats). This by far took the most time.
The slats were then attached with more deck screws.
Then we put them in place and there ya go!

Those are some very nice benches Gwen. You gave me some ideas about what I would like to do. Now, if I can just get the other half to help me....
