This little cutie arrived in the mail today with a label that reads: "specie Phal "Gino" JC/AOS". I won it on E-bay and it carried the same name on E-bay. I didn't question the name because I assumed that it would be properly labeled when it arrived. What you see is what you get so I called the grower, Baldan Orchids, maker of the famous Phal. Baldan's Kaleidoscope who informed me that it was awarded a JC by the judges under the name that was on the tag and that was the only name they had for it. She did not know the parents names but thought it to be a Doritis pulcherrima and Phal. equestris cross because it is a miniature that makes basal growths like Doritis instead of keikis like equestris. I couldn't find it on RHS. I don't know what I have at this point but it sure is cute. All suggestions welcome.
Wow, and thanks. You made that seem so easy. I am so delighted to now have the correct name for my plant. I was reluctant to post the thread because I know how nearly impossible it can be sometimes to give an unknown a correct name but I am so happy that I did. Thanks again.
you're welcome. it's usually hard to find names for unknowns, but it gets a lot easier when you have part of the name, and know that it was awarded a judges' commendation.
I'm pretty pleased to find that the AOS award is listed in the correct name for this plant....not Phal equestris var trilabiata 'Gino'. There is no such thing as var trilabiata and Baldan orchids could do the orchid world a great favor by putting the correct names on their plants and not giving out the hocus-pocus nonsense that is stated here when asked about the name of a plant.
The plant is Phal equestris 'Gino' JC/AOS awarded March 14, 1990 at the Florida Caribbean Judging center. The award description does point out that this plant is a peloric form.
There is a disappointing end to this story however. On Oct 14, 1979, the Florida North Central Judging Center in Tampa gave out a CHM/AOS to a sibling of this plant under the name Phal equestris var trilabiata 'Janet'. Shame on the judging center.
Your plant is Phal equestris 'Gino' JC/AOS. Enjoy it. It's pretty interesting.
