need help with my new addition
orchid experts! I am asking for your help and to share your knowledge and experience with newbie.
I just got my order and do not know what to do . I purchased the following plants:
Ascocenda Bigness X Korb Fah
Vanda Pure's Wax
Rhynchostylis gigantea 'Orange'
Phalaenopsis Tien Nong Stripe X
I know that I can grow all vandaceous in a vanda basket with out substrate (please correct me if I am wrong), but
I am confused with this size of plants I got. May I put it in a basket without substrate, or
Do I have to pot it in a substrate? I am attaching the pictures so you can visualize the size.
Thank you,
Helen

You can put Vandaceous plants in a fast draining media if you want, but they love being in vanda baskets. You can put them in the basket without anything else. I choose to use a little coconut fiber. Pieces of cork work well also. Neither media is required. I just think they help the plant get a foot hold. The important thing is to make sure the plants are secure in the baskets. The plants have to have time to attach roots to that basket. A plant whose roots are constantly chaffed and moved will have a hard time getting established.
The Phalaenopsis can be mounted, put in a pot or put in a vanda basket. With the pot or basket some large bark works or a misture of bark and some packaged phalaenopsis mix.

Hi Helen, welcome to the board. YOu're gonna love it here. Uechi is right on so I think your answer was found.
Tose are tiny and beautiful I love your choices. They sell real small baskets for those that I think they would look great in. You could also just tie them to a mount. Have fun and ask away if you have more questions.

Welcome to the board! This is a wonderful place, filled with people who share knowledge freely, and I'm sure you'll love it here.
You don't mention where you are, and so your growing consitions and temperatures. None of these plants will like nights cooler than about 60 degrees F. All like at least partial shade, with the Phal. and Rhynchostylis liking the most indirect light. None want to be allowed to have too much dry time, but all need good air circulation to the roots, so an open container would be good. If you use a basket you will want some sort of medium in with the plant to hold a bit of moisture. The Phal. and Rhynchostylis will do well either mounted or in a basket, or a well-draining pot.
Good luck, and please post of your progress with them!

THANK YOU EVERYBODY for your generous help and kind Welcome! I already love this place and people.
I am from Tampa FL, but originally from Ukraine, so pardon my English. Right now we have nights between 47-57 F, so not an option for these plants to go outside. I am attaching the picture how I set it up for now on a kitchen window sill, till I get it done right according your advise. I think I can leave it there till the spring. It is a bright window, but the sun is only around 4PM-5PM for 30 min @ this time of the year. I sprayed it every morning and I think the moisture/humidity is coming from the vase because I put water in. I am going to put them in net pots ( I have it available) with some bark according your advise. I just hope they will be Ok, because I nave had such a small plants.

You should get them potted as soon as possible. They will be much happier with the roots settled in.
Oh, and your English is great!

Hi and welcome. I am growing my vandas bareroot outside in my back yard. I just received an Rhyn. Gigantea peach that is about your size and I attached it to a hook. I water it and all the plants that are mounted daily. I also have 2 vandas and 1 aerides growing bareroot.
I recently posted pics of a phal. that I placed in a vanda basket bareroot. (in the phal. section) I previously had it growing in a 10 inch basket with nothing but coconut husk fiber in it. It originally came in a 6" pot. It was busting out of the basket so I decided to transplant it to a bigger one. I had to take apart the basket so as to minimize the root damage, but it's happy where it is at the moment.
having said that, Miami is generally warmer than tampa, so my weather conditions are different than yours. Good luck and welcome to the board. You'll find very knowledgeable people here.

Hi Everybody! I feel like I am on this board forever. You definitely make this place like home.
Couple questions I have:
Peeweelovesbooks What kind of hook have you attached your plant? Pardon if this is a stupid question. You are absolutely correct our conditions are different. We will have 37F Tuesday night, so I would need to get some plants into my lanai. How to find your post in phal section? Do you remember the title?
Nenella, thank you for the picture. This new addition is a beginning of my project: to grow these plants in a vase like you, BUT I did not expect it to be seedlings. The seller described “small plants in 4” pot, so I was assuming it would be a little bit bigger.
One more question (it sounds so funny “one more”) where are you buying vanda baskets? Do you know the place with reasonable price?
Helen
