Very cool Jay. I knew I'd seen this before, I did a little digging and found an old thread. Here's a link to page three of a thread about sphag-in-a-bag where Orchidophile described his method. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...-please-3.html Check out his gallery for a few neat photos of his "biosphere".

I have tried doing the traditional sphag n-bag and had poor results. I usually ended up with additional rot or other fungus. The live sphagnum is open air and still receiving quite a bit of air circulation so I believe that is helping the process.
I hope this growth continues so that I can pot it up in S/H. I will let you know when that happens and update with more photos.

Here is an update for anyone interested. It has now been 3 weeks sitting on top of the live sphagnum moss. The two roots are not getting "hairy" and it has started a third root.

Considering that the plant has been with the sphag 3 weeks, I'm impressed! How is the other plant doing? Are you seeing the same amount of root growth?
Next time I have an orchid in need of saving, I'll try with live sphagnum, which is very plentiful around here.

The Neo is not growing as fast, but it still has the one good root it started. None of the leaves have declined, and the new leaves seem to be growing still. I will update if the Neo starts to take off like the Paph. Dollgoldi.
A side note, the live sphagnum is actually planted and growing. I was trying to grow it first for carnivorous plants and stuck the broken piece of Paph in there as a "I don't really know what to do with this but lets see what happens."

Maybe start adding a bit of KLN when you water the Neo and the Dollgoldi? I've had just great results using it, quick root growth.
Camille! I love your duck avatar! And you are so lucky to have live sphagnum readily available! I just ordered some from RSS. . .in the Classifieds. LOL

I have something called Voodoo Juice. It is heavily loaded in beneficial bacteria that promote root growth and nutrient uptake. I got it at my local hydroponic store. I have not been using it long enough to make a statement as to how good it is, but I will keep you updated.

The use of live Sphagnum moss on my orchids and as a growing medium is very successful and once the moss is never compacted around the plants, pot flushed once a week with rain water and left growing green and healthy, there is nothing better.
