Well, I was really recommending the OpenOffice to the Mac users because OpenOffice was originally developed for Unix based systems, and OSX is a Unix based system. There are really a ton of options for creating a database in the Unix world, from little single table things to billion item multi table things. There is a part of OpenOffice called Base, which sounds like the Access equivalent, so it probably would be just as easy to use. I can't say that I've used it, all the db things I've done in the Unix world were using other dbs.

For those using Excel, my son-in-law showed me how to put in pictures. It is very simple. They will not show a thumbnail, but will pop up a bigger picture of each plant. All you have to do is highlight the cell you want, go to Insert, Insert Hyperlink, then choose the picture you want inserted. Then when you click the hyperlink box, the picture will pop up in an Internet Explorer window. Very easy.

I had made an Excel file with thumbnails prior to this. Each picture was there when the program opened. I had lots of room to write as the picture overlay 3-4 rows.

So it can be done either way with Excel. With the hyperlinks, no picture until you tell it to show, but quick loading of the program. With inserted thumbnails, pictures all show, but slow to load.

Hi Jerry ... one thought, what does flyfishing got to do with orchids? I am glad to find another soul brother with similar interests and passions. While flyfishing in the tropics I was able to increase my interest and collection of orchids since I also noticed that orchids appear to grow much better around the best flyfishing holes. Now, I still have to figure out this computer and the maze of information that I have to deal with to take full advantage of this wonderful aid to my other interests. It is all fun.

Tropic
Fly fishing and orchids have nothing to do with each other, but too many log in names is confusing to me, so I keep it simple. :-) I am trying to keep my orchids simple also. Finding the Orchid Board was extremely helpful. My Excel files are brief, just pix, when/where bought, when flowers and repotted. I'm trying not to overdo it, unlike the fly fishing!!!! I too am happy to find someone who has the same interests, as divergent as they are. I was looking for a way to reconcile the 2 in my mind. My only though is that half the enjoyment of fishing is being out there in nature, anyway. At least up north here I can bring the tropics inside to enjoy!!!!

I have used Cattleya-Log for years and love it. I would recomend it to everyone. One of the best things about it is if you have photos of your flowering orchids you can include them on your information page about the orchids. It can also be used for any other plant that you want to track.
