The other thing I find interesting is that Cattleya Log is based on Access. I've used it (Cattleya Log) for over a year and other than operatior error with the newer version....I dont have any complaints

I have been tring to keep track of my orchids for the last year and start to get overwhelmed. It's hard to keep track of your addiction. Like logging every drink you have if your an alcoholic

Ya know, I used to keep track of every little thing; new growth, new roots, clipped a yellow leaf today - now I just log the darn thing into a list and only track pests and other ailments....that is if I have any

I use MS Access, but I'm not any kind of database expert, so my set-up is pretty primitive. It's effective for database queries, such as what's in bloom now, or what goes dormant in winter.

I always told my department managers that it was really important to have a computer since there are times that an ordinary paper weight just isn't heavy enough!!! Now that everyone knows my knowledge level concerning computers, I will admit to trying Access briefly (very briefly in my case). In defense of Access, I will admit that it is a true database while Excel, though quite often used as a "database" is really a spreadsheet program. Has anyone looked at OpenOffice? While essentially the same as Microsoft Office, I find it easier to use and it is also freeware. I especially like their presentation program (I think it is called Impress) which is so much easier than PowerPoint.

Use OpenOffice and you might be to connect to one of the Access based dbs. But, it'd just be easier to make a new one using Base, or mySql or any number of dbs. This is assuming you have OSX or higher.

By the time everyone finished reading this, two things will be obvious; One, you could write my entire computer knowledge on the head of a pin with room left over and two, I have no idea what the previous questions really mean. I am using xp pro, 2003 and have no problems in using Open Office nor in downloading the program. I have a few people I correspond with who use Vista as an OS. Neither want to put OpenOffice on their computers. No problem! The OpenOffice program has a direct export feature which automatically converts the message to a pdf file so anyone who has Acrobat can read the message with no problem. I understand that Mac users can download OpenOffice but I don't know about using a non Windows browser. I do know that there are a number of faq concerning the downloading and use of OpenOffice on Macs. Please, don't think that I am talking up the use of this software. The only reason I have it is that I purchased a used computer that did not have Windows Office suite installed and since the OpenOffice was free ware I installed it on that computer. Liked it so well I put it on the other as well.
