Oh, I dunno. A division of an awarded Paph is always gonna be BIIIIIIG bucks. They do not clone well, Paphs. A good paph is always rare and valuable.

Not that I would spend that kind of money on any plant, and the Cattleya is preposterous. It needs to at least be previously flowered and proven....

But for a good stud plant, and speaking as a breeder, I would easily pay up to $2000. But, you know, it's a write-off, anyway, when I am using it to further a breeding program that is my livelihood...

In fairness, the starting price for that orchid was $49. 95% of the blame for the selling price lies squarely with the buyer. I'm not even going to pretend to understand what makes Ebay bidders spend that much over the initial asking price just because there's an award attached to it. Then again I don't understand why people spend $100,000 on an E-type Jag when my Pulsar would get me to work in the time it would take me to get the Jag's engine to turn over.

I'm not a Paph enthusiast in the slightest. You can set the price of an orchid at whatever you like. People are either going to pay for it or not. One of the carnivorous plant nurseries in my area sells related books at ridiculous prices because, even though most locals couldn't fathom paying those prices, he can make a mint out of the Japanese market.

I suspect Zephyrus Orchids has little interest in actually selling much of that Paph off and sees far more value in selling it's seedlings. I have no doubt someone somewhere would pay $19,999 for it (it's not worth $20,000, though) and no doubt they'd take the suckers... I mean aficionados money. There is also value in the spectacle of listing such an orchid regardless of whether they want to sell it (after all you've just advertised their site).

Careful Andrew. The Tahooli tribesmen of Brazil have a saying, "Bad things happen when you mock the jaguar."

Well, actually, I made that up. But if there really were such a people I'm sure they would have a saying like that.

I don't remember seeing anything about documentation in the listing. Is someone just taking his word for it?

You have a valid point there. I tried copying the description only but you can't cause its copy righted. Also having the slight but distinct feeling they might be a little over priced,.......,well you know.....!
