Thought of sharing this with you in case it would give some idea.

Most of my plants are on orchid stands and pergola. Here are a couple of them :

Well, am reminding myself that some new paintwork would be in order!

Paid a visit to a friend in the neighbourhood recently. She had just started the hobby a year ago. I thought I'd share some of the pics I took of her display area.

In the Jan or Feb 2007 issue of the AOS magazine was the nicest shade house plans that I have seen. It was basically a free standing pergola type. 4X4 upright post eight ft. apart in concrete, 2x6's surrounding the perimeter at the top, bolted on, then cross beams were 2x6's. On the sides some lattice panels and shade cloth on the top, ends, sides as needed. Shade cloth was weighted at bottom to keep from flying about. They used shade cloth on side to keep out birds, but not necessary. For a more fancy unit, paint white, flooring could be brick, concrete pavers, gravel or what-ever.

Thanks Cheryl,
it does surprise me that orchids don't have to be in a GH with always high humidity levels.

Most of the orchids out on the table and around it that are growing very well are Australian native dendrobiums and hybrids [like speciosum, delicatum, tetrangonum, cattleya hybrids, crucifix orchids etc.

I don't think masdevallias or other orchids like that would do well, but you never know.

I have several stems of Arachnis flos-aeris that is supposed to need it hot, and we are getting cold nights here but it's actually growing very well putting out new roots.

How many of the outdoor collections in this thread are permanant, in that all the orchids there stay there all year round?

I know many people in colder climates put their orchids out for summer and bring them back when it gets colder.

Mine went out in spring but I don't know if I'll be leaving them there or not.. The shadecloth above has some plastic over it but only the middle of the table stays dry, which has been ok in summer but come winter, could be a real problem

WOW! That wooden pergola looks really nice. And so many flowers, palms. And everything looks so clean and in order. You live in heaven. And the setup of your friend looks very nice too. I even don't know which one is better...
