Very nice Wally , what is your sun exposure? It looks like this is built behind your patio, the shade cloth protecting west sun?

The area is pretty well protected by hedges. I wasn't home for the wind during the last few days, so I'm not sure how strong it is back there. It did blow a lot of stuff into the pool though, and I just want to make sure that doesn't happen to my orchids.

Here is a picture, the plants with the big leaves will be finding a new home to make way for whatever setup I build.

Yes Cheryl...it is attached to the screen room on the back of the house. The shade cloth is hanging over the end to protect the plants from the afternoon sun. I have no trees on the back side of the house so I get full sun exposure for most of the day. I have 40% aluminet on top of the room for the vandas. Next year....expanding it down the other 12 feet, which would make it 10 x 24

Wow! I played with cedar slats as a "roof" over part of mt deck (SE exposure) this year and the plants liked it - they didn't like the hail storm we got in June, though and I lost a bunch. I think I have been encouraged by these pics to put lattice or something over the whole deck and have more places to hang plants.

That would work with the lattice, I just need all the sun I can get for vandas. When I wrap it up for the winter, I put some lattice on top to make sure the poly doesn't fly across the yard.

Here ya! Vandas are not in my future though, mostly Phals and Oncidium, Bllra, Brassia (hopefully). No full sun stuff in summer.

I am sure that it would work. I have a friend that uses the lattice that grows phals. She has the best luck with it because as the sun moves throughout the day, the light comes in at different points on the leaf without burning them

That was my experience with the limited run I did this past summer. I tried a shaded area and it ended up too dark (leggy growth) but the open lattice area worked really well for me. I just need to add some shade cloth to keep the hail out!
