Yeah, I'm going to try and move it, or at least supplement the area with some grow lights. Hopefully that will help.

Don't cut the spike! I bet its a heat humidity problem. Start with that and go from there. Change one parameter at a time.

Agreed. I think that's sort of what we're saying. Since the plant set the spike, and then the buds blasted, I look to light (either too much or too little) as one of the culprits. Since the plant is in low light, I'd try higher light (with the same spike). It's possible that over the period from when the spike set and developed until the buds should have opened, the heater came on. For me, I've seen lots of bud blast usually associated with changes (drastic) of humidity. The light is pretty consistent (not constant, without supplemental CF lights) so that is rarely an issue. I have usually been successful in bringing the last of the buds to blossoms when I increase the humidity - which is why I move my plants away from the sun. It isn't so much a light issue as a drying do to too much sun in my case. I definitely agree with the trying one thing at a time scenario. Otherwise gets too confusing.

Well, I've been gradually trying, although this last bud was again a loss - I'm working on the humidity thing, trying to keep it consistant, which hopefully ::fingerscrossed:: will help! We'll see!!

Does anyone (in canada) know where I could find one of these? My friends at paramount have several but will not part with them

Try any of the vendors here in Ontario. I see them for sale on the sales tables all the time. Beaver Valley Orchids has them and i know that Schreibers has them as well, along with Orchids In Our Tropics. Those are all good vendors too and will sell you a great plant.

Clouds orchids has Onc. Mendenhall 'Hildos' AM/AOS (Butterfly x papilio). A medium sized seedling is $15.00 or from their wholesale listing 10 plugs for $80.00. The plugs are a good size...if you can wait for them to get bigger before flowering. Split an order with you in the spring?? I have received excellent plants from them in the past.

We have Psychopsis (Papilo*Kalihii)" Green Valley" plants in bloom at the Orchid Shop. I am not real sure about the best way to ship blooming plants yet but I suppose it could be worked out to send budded ones.

I was thinking about the bud blast problem some more and have a couple of questions. What are you growing in? How much and how often are you fertilizing? and how dry are you allowing the plant to become between waterings. Maybe the plant isn't getting enough energy to bloom?

Dave...Joe from Beaver Valley has decided to get out of the business. The website has been taken down. He is far too busy with his real job etc and found he didn't have the proper time to devote to his orchid business. That being said however he still has quite a few plants for sale. I would send him an email with ORCHIDS in the subject line and mark it high priority. (you know....the '!' symbol) I was up to visit him last wek and there were still tons of nice plants left in his greenhouse. Sometimes he takes awhile to answer as he does a lot of traveling.
