Oh, this isn't an either or kind of situation. The orchid board fills one niche and the orchids wikia fills another...with only a little overlap. The orchids wikia is more like a collaborative orchid encyclopedia while the Orchid Board is a place where people can post pictures and discuss resources, experiences, failures and successes.
Hmmm, let's see. Does anybody have any epiphytic species orchids that they would like more information on? I've got quite a decent orchid library and if any of my books discuss one of your orchids I'll create an entry for it in orchids wikia. In return, you'll create 1 new orchids wikia article on any orchid or improve an existing article.
My orchid books mainly cover orchids from Mexico, Brazil, Southern Africa, Australia, China and the Himalayas...but I also have books covering Dendrobiums, Oncidiums, Angraecoids, Laelias, Encyclias, Coelogynes, Catasetums, Cyrtopodiums and Phaeleonopsis.
Any takers?

Epi - on that coelogyne piece, I see an example of exactly the kind of "final word" thing I was referring to. Granted, it's relatively minor, but an example nonetheless:
"Grow in medium fir bark" sounds pretty authoritative to me, yet it totally ignores the fact that it may be inappropriate for some, based upon their growing conditions.

As I already stated, I'm not fond of such sites, so I hope you won't be offended if I don't go and check now. The fact that it can be modified - even in an effort to clarify things - without discussion leaves it open to the "abuse" I abhor.

Oh, I'm definitely not offended. Especially since discussion invariably occurs when people disagree over modifications. If nobody disagrees then a discussion is not necessary.

I don't think a wiki is a bad thing. It just shouldn't be a person's only source of information. I usually double check any info I find on the net by checking out other websites or old OB threads to see personal experiences/contradictions. OB may be wrong or a bit off the mark sometimes, but at least the discussions let you see the different sides to the topic.
I will definately check out that wiki.
