Hi all...interesting thread. I grow quite a few cymbids, and every year I run my GH a few degrees cooler in the winter at night--perhaps if I get another GH up and running in the near future I'll further experiment with minimum temps. That being said, I have had my plants down to 36F with no damage to either plants or spikes, but the plants were very dry and I had my circulating fans mixing up the air quite well. Interestingly, as Royal notes, I was surprised at the resiliance of the other plants in my collection at this low temp--aside from losing a few phrags and cattleya hybrids, everything else pulled through just fine. I wonder what the lowest temp is that cyms. can be maintained at though... it is one thing to have nights near freezing and days back up in the upper 40's and higher, but what about culture where day temps never make it out of the mid 30's? I know that Cym. goeringii will thrive under these conditions, provided that it does not freeze at the root zone, but I wonder about the many hybrids that we grow... any thoughts on this?
