Default Den. speciosum feeding schedule?

My speciosum is finally spiking for the first time. Looks like there will be 4-5 canes worth.

Mine came from SB Orchid Estate about 6 years ago and is potted in granite chips. I grow in a 60% shade house in the Florida Keys which is obviously subtropical so our orchids are in "grow" mode darn near year round.

I reduce watering it and completely eliminate feeding around Dec 1. By reducing water I mean the occasional natural quick shower (maybe 1-2x/month) and a good soaking from me every other week.

My question is, when is the proper time to resume water and feeding? Bud spike? Flowering? Post flowering? Our normal "wet season" doesn't typically start until May.

I've only grown hybrids with speciousum but the more I neglected them and let them cool and dry in the winter the better the show was when they started to spike and send up growths.

I reduce watering somewhat in winter - but then, I reduce it for everything because things stay wet longer in the cold. But they still get a good spray with the hose. (I do turn off the sprinklers in that area, so hand-watering is just less on general principles) They're not protected from rain. i just skip them when I go around fertilizing (which I also don't do as often in winter) , I start again around now, they're spiking and days are getting longer. Not scientific, not particularly planned, they still bloom profusely. They certainly got watered this year, complements of Mother Nature! They also got cold.

Thanks Roberta.

"Cold" here is relative, right? Maybe gets down to 60 degrees with a stiff north wind for 2-3 nights in a row at most but will still be in low 70's during daylight sun. and that may happen as much as 3 times all winter. Typical is 80 during the day and low 70's at night I was concerned about getting it to bloom without a real cold snap but looks like it was good enough.

The background on my question is that we have our show the first weekend in March and I was curious if I started watering and hitting them with bloom booster if it would develop and bloom fast enough for the show.

Bloom booster doesn't boost anything. Ray has talked about this quite a bit. I don't think that watering has anything to do with timing the blooming either... mine are watered through the winter and bloom very well, pretty much every year. They do get a lot colder than they do at your house... nights down to 40 deg F (4 deg C) are petty common and occasionally lower. Pretty much all the speciosums grown along the California coast (and there are LOTS of them because they do so well) get the same weather pattern, might be a factor in all of them blooming about the same time plus or minus a few weeks.

I don't think there's anything that you can do to "make it bloom" faster. It'll do what it will do. (I have tried a "bloom dance" to encourage plants for shows ... doesn't work. But in general, one should not put calendars anywhere near the growing area ... they so often perversely bloom and finish just before a show or meeting, or open up the week after. )

Seriously, if they do bloom better after a rainy winter, to me that's a clue that "drying out" is not beneficial. Mine bloom quite well every year, and I do water Dendrobiums in winter - "rain" comes out a hose when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate which is most of the time.

oooohhhhh- a bloom dance!
I had never thought of that one.
I think that's worth a shot.
It can't hurt anything right? Unless somebody takes a video of it.

I also would chant "Bloom... Bloom...Bloom..." That didn't work consistently either...

D. speciosum is the only dendrobium I’ve grown (unless you count inobulbon). 2” tall seedling in a 2” pot up to 3’ canes in a 12” basket. Got fed (25 ppm N) and watered all year, but still bloomed like a banshee.

I don’t have enough of a collection to experiment, but it would surprise me if Kelpak didn’t enhance blooming.

Likely helps (though once a D. speciosum hits its stride, I'm not sure there is anything that would make it STOP blooming). But I don't think there is any treatment that could make one already showing buds accelerate it's "action" to bloom 1st week of March (as opposed to the 2nd or 3rd week, annoyingly after the show) unless it was ready to do so anyway.

It was on Kelpak Ray. Once a month as part of my feeding regimen but it's last dose of that would have been 3 months ago.

Are you suggesting more often or should I just go ahead and resume my normal growing season water and feed program?
