Sorry, but I have to disagree with some of that...
Orchiata is not "calcined" (dead burned), it is composted and dolomite is added to control the pH. Yes, that is a reason to not soak it, and yes, the substrate will shift pH over time (although I never experienced that, myself).
The pH being between 5.5 and 6.5 does not optimize nutrient uptake in a non-soil environment, because orchid media have essentially no cation exchange capacity (CEC). No CEC = no change in media capture with pH change = no change in availability or uptake. Yes, pH can affect uptake by the plants, but the pH has to be fairly far to either end of the scale to have an effect - basically, if it's in solution, it's available and can be taken up.
