You’re apparently right, although it was Bill that told me otherwise.
Shadeflower- I owe you a big apology!

I think Erik Runkle was the head of the orchid research program at MSU a few years ago. He now focuses on growing crops under lights.

For those who don't understand what tmoney wrote, Michigan State University is in East Lansing, Michigan, and the University of Michigan is in Ann Arbor. They are bitter rivals in American football.
My observation has been this intrastate rivalry is perhaps one of the most intense in the US, exceeded only by the University of Michigan - Ohio State University rivalry.
Graduates of these schools appear to care more about American football than their degree programs, or anything else.

The Michigan State mascot is the Spartan. The University of Michigan mascot is the Wolverine (a vicious cold-climate North American mammal, not the silly comic book character.) The mascot of Ohio State is the Buckeye, a common name for the American chestnut, Castanea dentata, which was once a major portion of the eastern North American temperate forest.
To give an example of the craziness of these people: At one of the hospitals here in Phoenix a nurse, a graduate of Ohio State University, went into every operating room one night. She glued to the ceiling a small logo of Ohio State University, directly over the head of the operating table, so every patient undergoing surgery would see it just before they went to sleep.

and buckeyes used to throw actual buckeyes at michigan fans in the visitor section during games. and if you haven't seen or held a buckeye, those things hurt. like for real can cause physical harm, especially when hurled from 2 sections above hand grenade style.
it was a good decision on behalf of the ncaa to not allow beer sales at sporting venues....
anyws, sorry i inadvertently hijacked this thread. but msu is bad....just saying

Let’s not forget Georgia versus Georgia Tech. Tech even has “to hell with Georgia” in the fight song. That rivalry began in 1893, while the Michigan-MSU rivalry began 5 years later.

I'm been "at" (via Zoom) a couple Indoor Farming conferences this year where he was also participating/chairing. I had no idea has also worked with orchids! Good to know, I may have a chat with him next time we cross paths at a conference. I see he has quite a lot of orchid related publications pre 2010.
PS: Sorry for ruining your fun, but I really have no idea what you all are going on about! Had to look up what a buckeye was, and discovered its just about the same as what UK folks call 'conkers'. No, not fun to get hit in the head by one of those!
