What would you do - expensive orchid clone virus
Default What would you do - expensive orchid clone virus

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering what you might do if you were in my shoes.

I ordered an expensive (by my standards and probably by most of this board's standards) clone of an orchid species. The plant was decent-ish quality, but had a couple of bad looking leaves. I tested the plant with a virus strip and it came back with a very clear virus result - not a faint evaporation looking line - the test was practically glowing.

Vendor's policy promises replacement for diseased plants, and as such the vendor offers a replacement plant of a different clone, and by the looks of it, a nice one, though I suspect (it may not be the case) that I could get an equivalent plant for a lot less elsewhere.

I am probably a bit irrationally stuck on the cultivar itself, which is why I spent a lot on it in the first place. I would prefer to be refunded on the plant itself if I can't get the same clone.

Am I being unreasonable here? What would you do?

Send photos of the plant and the test to the vendor and ask for a replacement. If that is their policy, go with it.

And, who is Karen?

If the vendor promises to make it good, just be really nice and polite and I doubt you will have any problem. You can always ask the vendor to test whatever the replacement might be and, if it is a less-expensive substitution, just ask for the difference in refund (minus the cost of testing).

Good luck!

Or, I suppose, you can return the plant to the gardener, by agreement with the fact that he will return the money to you
