The AOS is almost all volunteers. Any member wanting to update cultural sheets would be welcome to volunteer to work with the appropriate committee. There is no other way for them to be updated since there isn't enough money to hire somebody.

Another note about the AOS culture sheets - they are very general. First, orchid growing in different regions (climate, humidity, etc) is more variable than a one or two page document can address. And in many (if not most) genera, species (which are the ancestors of the hybrids) come from a range of climates. There is no simple guide to "Dendrobium" or "Bulbophyllum", "Cattleya", etc... to grow successfully once reaching beyond hybrid Phalaenopsis, one must dig deeper to understand the needs of a specific plant. Getting down and dirty to the species level is frequently necessary. Part of the fascination of the hobby! An endless amount to learn.

I don’t know if I entirely agree with William’s comment about everyone wanting to be an expert. Sure, there’s a lot of that, but I think most folks are trying to be helpful, sharing what they (think they) know - many times without realizing it’s not entirely correct or universal.

i kind of agree with Ray on this one also, most people just want to help. although there are select few that think they are experts. usually those are the ones unwilling to learn new things, or take advice.

humans are exploratory beings, and the "been there, done that" mentality keeps us from going back and improving upon old literature, correcting it.

We are a race of information. and with the internet letting everybody post all information, true or false, it is a crazy world dodging misinformation left and right.
