That's such a hard thing to do. It's so sad, and I hate it, but I do it when I have to. I hate harming animals, but our native wildlife is much more important than invasive introduced species. I'll say it again... kill every last one of them. They don't belong here and they are harmful to the things that do belong here.

We do not have close neighbors. But, if you trap them and then dispatch them...

I've said this before: anything we dispatch, is then eaten by another member of the food chain. Yesterday we had foxes in "the bone yard." Turkey vultures and Hawks are regular visitors. Nothing goes to waste.

Although our back neighbors are 400' away, we try to use a 22 or pellet gun. (We do target practice ourselves and our neighbors are ok with that).

Thanks for clarifying dolly. Our points are different. I was just pointing out that the wildlife etc are often the ones that were there first, and they just live in their natural environment, but we humans intruded/invaded/took-over (or humans introduced themselves and the animals without asking the animals if they wanted to be brought along), so we're pretty much THEIR nuisance. The animals likely see us as being the nuisance. But I do know what you mean heheheh.

Oh thank you ES, I'm from Oklahoma and I fired my first gun when I was hunting with my dad when i was 12. I had no idea why firing a gun in a residential area was illegal. Thanks so much for clearing that up to me. it has been a mystery to me for the last 16 years why I got a ticket for that. Never mind that the lot behind my backyard was vacant.

It's Oklahoma. They tend to be lax about gun laws. Mostly they would have just told me to be careful and not do that again when I told them I was shooting a nuisance animal in my own back yard. Of course I know the law. The surprising part is that he ticketed me for that. People fire guns in their backyards all the time, and most of them are just ignored, or they lie. I thought if I told the truth, he would be more understanding and let me off with a warning, because that's what usually would happen. Perhaps it was the end to the month and he still had his ticket quota to fulfill. I don't know, but it was strange in OKlahoma to get a ticket for shooting a skunk in your own yard. It didn't offend me, it just seemed like you made some assumptions about a place you don't know much about.

I think ES was talking to me JScott. It is legal to shoot in the county, which is where we are. However, common sense (which we both possess) would tell you a bullet travels pretty far (the Chief can quote exact feet). So, it's best to use a 22 or pellet gun and shoot down. Also, never shoot at concrete (basic safety is stressed at every gun class.)

But, nonetheless, ES, your point is well taken. One should take every precaution! It's only responsible gun ownership.

Oh Lort! How have I missed being involved in this thread! Let me jump right in with both feet and be politically incorrect! Kansans are like that... redneck and unruly.

I am NOT one of those who says Oh bless their little exoskeleton heart. Insects who wander into MY personal territory will be dispatched. With very few exceptions. Inside the house, on my deck where I sit... go somewhere else.

Snakes... they have their place if they eat mice or rats. Not in my house, not in my chicken coop. And NOT in my strawberry patch while I'm there. I have a dog who always checks the patch for me before I wade in. Or the raspberries and blackberries. If the right dog isn't available, husband is a close second.

Anoles, well... don't we all love them? Huge iguanas that wanna bite me... nope. Having said that, all we have around here are Italian wall lizards (outside their habitat) and nothing big I've ever seen. Something eating anything that belongs to me? Nope, nope, dispatched pronto if I can find it. Were I you, DCoconut, I would be livid, already have thrown on a ghillie suit, and perhaps a flame thrower.

Regarding firearms... we live in "the county" but not within "city limits." One block outside the "city limits" of the state capital of Kansas. Firearms are allowed anywhere outside the city limits here. And there are tons of what one would perceive as "residential areas" around.

We shoot anything from a pellet gun to a 50 cal black powder rifle on our property. So do a lot of our neighbors on the other side of the creek. We know what we're doing. Are there folks who shoot guns who don't know what they're doing? Absolutely. I cringe to think of them. In my opinion anyone who carries a gun should have to qualify with it to carry or shoot it. But discharging a firearm in a residential area... I think that depends a lot on where one lives.

Have I ruffled enough feathers yet?
