Hybrid Question
I've got a question about hybridizing plants. I know of a hybrid called Dendrobium 'Hawaii' a Den. phalaenopsis is the seed parent and a Den. tokai is the pollen parent.
My question is, what whould happen if the two species plants changed roles? Would the hybrid be the same?

Hi Newguy. Even though mom and dad may change roles,(a neet trick there) the offspring would still be named the same.

But, might they exhibit slightly different characteristics in appearance?

Propably the plant would look the same since the genetics mix up the same way. What does bother me though is that maybe the sequence in which the genetical code is written would be different although the information is the same. In that case it might be possible the plant has slightly different characteristics. So it may be possible
Its just a speculation in my mind but the living proof is right here in this room. Two cacti with this situation. Both plants look the same and flower the same. But one has a different timelenght in flowering and starts earlier. Thats quite interesting if you are asking me. Anyone having a good ref on what I am claiming??

My limited genetics classes says there has to be a dominent gene and a resesive gene. (I think I have that right). So if male is domenent, then the appearance and behavior should be one way. However, if female is the dominent one, then another way? Like I said, I was a failure at genetics.

Ross, you're basically right on. Whichever plant you use as pollinator or pod plant, each cross is still a different one, resulting in a variation in the combination of the same genes. The offspring will still be related, although not identical.

Kim, for those of us genetically challenged I think this means one set might have frilly lips if father was a frill. But if mother was a frill, maybe not. One set of offspring might have red lips while if parents reversed the petals might be white. Is this basically the idea?

If they are hybirds with an assortment of genes from a long lineage, can it end up with characteristics not present in the parents but ones from other hybrids in it's genealogy?

So is everyone saying that you could make a new hybrid by just switching the roles of the parents? Or is it like the children of humans? Everyone's a little different?
I think that Dorothy is right with her statement. Because, I have characteristics that my parents don't have, but my grandparents have. I'm sure that it's similar.
