Smile c. amethystoglossa var coerulea

Anyone know where I can get a decent sized plant? It's a gift for a friend and I'd really like bigger than seedling size.

Thanks a bunch for any help.

Deb,

I've never heard of a coerulean form of Cattleya amethystoglossa, so anything a bit larger than a seedling may prove to be in the hundreds range.

However, seedlings of C. amethystoglossa are relatively cheap, but they need much time to mature to first blooming. Blooming sized plants range from $30 to $150, and many that I've seen (especially offered on eBay) are not of good flower or plant quality. The plants can grow quite tall, over 2ft. in some cases...

Who's offering the corulean C. amethystoglossa, out of curiosity?

-Pat

I know Santa Barbra Orchid Estate has a few Cattleya amethystoglossa listed on their webstie, but they do not specify if any are the var coerulea. If you call them they would be able to tell you. Here is a link to their Cattleya amethystoglossa listing: Cattleya at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate

Thanks becca, I've emailed Santa Barbara to see what they have to offer, if anything.

The only plants that I have found so far are on ebay and are tiny but expensive. And like you said Pat, they may be of inferior grade. So I'm kind of scared of them.

I'll let you know if my research shows up any better plants.

I know H&R Nurseries was selling coeruleas last fall, though they were all seedlings (in fact, I bought one that turned out to be two!!). You might want to call them and ask if they have any more. If you're looking for adults, they will cost A LOT!! The seedlings I got were in 2" pots and were $20!! I consider H&R to be the best value producers anywhere. By that I mean you get incredible plants for really low prices. So if they were selling 2" plants for $20, a full grown plant will much more expensive. Good luck!!
