I went ahead and ordered a Laelia Pumila, Paph QF Mini, and Cattleya forbesii. The latter is a complete mess of a plant, unpotted during shipping, shrivled bulbs. Can't win them all I guess. Love the Laelia and Paph.

I think the mounting orientation follows the growth pattern. Just got my new one... both in baskets, I may mount at least one of them in this orientation. In spike, clearly they like it.

Sad about the C. forbesii. Pot it (or basket it) up... those are some of the toughest little orchids around, it will very likely revive. I have one that I have had for many years, that has had all sorts of insults and indignities... it loves its wooden basket, mostly growing on the outside of it, blooms 2-3 times a year, a very compact plant.

Thanks Roberta, always coming with the top notch advice. I really don't have room in my mounted orchid area for a plant this size but maybe with some rearranging. I will mount it upside down too, on a branch or ceder shingle.

For the C. forbesii, I don't think you need to mount it. But it does seem to like its roots fairly free - mine didn't do much in a pot, only really took off when I put it in a wood basket, and did even better when it partially escaped. So a basket with large bark should work fine. I think of baskets as three dimensional mounts.

If I only had space! This section has misters for daily watering when I travel so anything not potted has to go in here... So mounting was the only option.

That should work fine! Point is, this plant is not fussy. It should be quite happy mounted with regular misting. While I haven't paid much attention to the rooting cycle, the fact that it blooms more than once a year makes me suspect that it roots more than once also. Which is great, since it is is the new roots that will grab the mount. Hint. if you have a larger piece of wood to put behind that mount, it may save you having to peel it off the wall or extricate from the mesh.

If it would really work better for you potted, an inorganic medium like LECA or scoria might let it get the air that it wants while keeping it under control. Might be a candidate for semi-hydro.

My USPS used to be timely... these days it's a crapshoot. With different carriers all the time. Most of them are running two routes.

And I've had several issues since first of year with packages going missing. This better not be one of 'em!!

I've had two packages disappear in transit in the last 6 months. They weren't live things. The vendors replaced them, but it took a while.
