And now I'm thinking Gastrochilus japonicus... What a lovely companion for Podangis. Nice one Camille!

Hopefully I get this little cutie this week and there won’t be much of a delay in the post. USPS has been awful lately for packages where even 2 day priority is taking 5-6 days. FedEx has been more reliable but they tend to not even knock, ignore the ‘hold at location for pickup’ instructions, leave packages on the sidewalk (in the fricken French Quarter!!!) or chuck them over my 8foot high courtyard wall as hard as they can... one time they over shot and it ended up on my neighbor’s balcony and cracked the glass on one of his French doors

Never again will I complain about shipping over here, I can't believe that level of 'service' even exists! That sounds just horrific! I hope that your little Podangis will arrive safe and sound.

Seriously! I am in shock. I thought I had experienced bad deliveries but all three of those are worse!
Leaving it on public, throwing it and throwing it way way too hard

Yeah, I am definitely not a fan of Fed Ex. Not once have the delivery drivers on my route even paid attention to the signature required. If I know someone uses fed ex, like Andy’s or H&R (who indecently also has a Podangis on their new summer list, fyi), I change the ‘hold for pickup’ location as soon as the label is created to my drug store down the street, then I’m good and it gets delivered to Walgreens. If it already is in route, no such luck, even if it shows up on the website. And as far as them tossing the packages or leaving them on the sidewalk, I have literally chased the fed ex truck down like a crazy person to ask them what in the world they were thinking. I haven’t gotten any orchids lost or damaged but I have had a couple of other things wrecked and a package of two irreplaceable 1930’s dresses stolen. That one hurt.
At least with USPS, my mailman is awesome. He even knows my crazy work schedule (I do 24hr on call shifts) and will give me a call to see if he should leave a package that says ‘Live Plants’ with my neighbor. Otherwise he will wait till he sees me and put whatever package in my hands. I just need to be careful this time of the year on what type of plants I get shipped with the recent delays.
Ok. Rant DONE!

Gastrochilus is a great choice. If you can't find G. japonicus, G. somai is similar (came from Andy's) and I recently got G. calceolaris, (Louisiana Orchid Connection) also very nice, all grow under same conditions.

Oh man. I hope I'm not the first to kill my pondangis.
I put it in my wardian case when it arrived and I've been watering it copiously. Oops. Don't do that. Over the past week I pulled off some of the wet green moss covering a portion of the root and one section of the root looks brown and dead. I'm also seeing a little brown spot on the "crown", ie the juncture between the the first root and first leaf. (What do you call that part of pondagis' body?) Pictures are attached. Is this rot? I've now removed the moss around the crown area.

I wouldn't worry about that one root - but it does want to dry out between waterings, so maybe back off the frequency a bit, the wardian case may be very humid. I also don't see the "crown" or growth area... these don't really have a distinct crown, the new leaves emerge from between the leaves of the newer ones, near the center. Deep in the plant there no doubt is something like a "crown", a growth point. Actually quite cool to see them emerge to make the "fan" bigger. The newer part is in the middle, so the outer leaves are the oldest. If you lose an old leaf, force of nature.

I have a 8 plant order basketed for mid July with LOC and that's one of them. I hope I didn't miss out.
On Podangis.....I've noticed some buds blasting so I have cut watering in half although I have a nice new leaf growing quickly in the middle of the fan. I may need to dispense with the sphag too before I really wanted to so we'll see. I'm keeping watch.

For the Podangis... I would not worry too much about bud blast on a new plant. It has had the shock of being packed and shipped and moved into a new home. All of which can interrupt the flowering process. Even if you don't get flowers this year, the number of spikes shows its potential. Any flowers on a new plant are just a bonus.

Alrightee, I'm going to spill a guilty secret. Y'all reminded me that I n-e-e-d a Gastrochilus japonicus. I was up, sleepless, at 5am, googling Gastrochilus japonicus. I found it for $14.99 plus $2.90 shipping on Amazon here in the US.
It's being sold by "Bloomify" who also goes by Orchid Gene. I checked out his Facebook page. He describes his business as a gift shop. If you scrutinize his business pictures you can see that his business is a kiosk in a shopping mall.
So, don't throw eggs at me. It was 5am, I had orchid lust, and I have a twitchy Amazon finger at the best of times. I ordered one.
I'll let you know how this works out. I'm so ashamed.
