So I asked Jonathan with Marlowe's why the Podangis from him were all mounted roots up. His reply...
I mounted these “upside down” so the water runs off and does not pool in the crown. We were rotting a lot here in the past when we potted them or hung them opposite way.
Which makes sense, when combined with what Roberta said about hers, roots down in the medium tending to rot, and the suspicion of it needing lots of air and the ability to run free...

So that, plus the info in the Baker culture sheet, convinces me that these really need their roots to run fairly free. Also in the Baker sheet, these can go cooler than I was giving them credit for. So if not mounted, semi-hydro (with its tendency to cool roots by evaporation) should be excellent.
If Marlowe's was having rot issues, I'm certainly not the one to toy with a change-up. Until I at least get my backup. Mine stays mounted as-is.

Oh, and Jonathan's really been enjoying my discussions with him about the crazy Podangis group we've got going on... he told me to let him know if there was anything else he could get for us or that we'd like to grow, he'd do his best to get it after he gets back from vacation. Hmmmmmm...... Podangis companion plants....

Thanks for finding out why they're mounted that way! I was also quite curious about it, but it's a very logical explanation.

A group of nutty orchid growers all wanting the same plant (and buying traveling companions with it) is probably very good for business!

There's an orchid group on Facebook in Dutch where regularily have project plants. There's actually a local grower who partnered up with them and offers a project plant deal every 1-3 months. I'm not part of that group (I don't need more orchid enablement in my life!) so I don't know if the group suggests plants they'd like or if he proposes whatever interesting species he comes across. I find it a pretty neat concept.

Oh yes, very much so interesting. And I'm glad they're staying on that side of the pond. I, as well, need no further encouragement. I get enough of that around here. Except maybe a little companion plant or two to iive with Podangis. Looking kinda lonely lately....

Consider one of those Cyrtorchis that started this whole thing.

Sounds like I missed something! If Cyrtorchis (whatever they are) are something that should be in one's collection, then I'm all ears.

OK... think I may start something again.

Here's Cyrtorchis chailluana. Not quite as little as the Podangis, but still small enough that there's certainly room for it. I grow it in a well-drained pot. Night-fragrant, grows on the warm side, low light. There are some other nice species as well, this is the only one that I have.

I looked at the other species of Podangis but didn’t care for it enough to find and buy it.

There’s one Akhaten sp? has that I really like, but turns out it’s carnivorous and I’ve never had success with anything carnivorous

Similar conditions to Podangis, but is much more forgiving of being grown in a pot. So humidity becomes less of an issue. Pretty much Phalaenopsis conditions.
