I do try to mostly re-home my divisions. First, to share the joy, and also to make room. Also, it's a safety valve... If I share a plant, and something happens to mine, perhaps the recipient of the division will have a piece to give back. Also a painless way to support the local orchid societies, by donating divisions to auctions. That also helps to free up some space. No matter how much space one has, it is never enough. Not enough room for duplicates.

No really. I over pot and pot in hydroton. I have pots 12" and 14" wide. It takes a long time for them to reach the brim of the pot. Once they start growing over themselves, I report.

This one I have to repot, but I can either divide, or to go to a 14" and I will to repot in a couple of years. This plant have been under an orange tree for ages.

Seedlings are way more work than established plants If I were to count the seedling I have in replate flask, regular flask, and compots I will be probably around 10,000 plants or more.

That would mean that every day of the year 30+ of those orchids would need transplanting.

The watering can be done automatically or by rain but repotting 1200 orchids yearly, even if just every 2 years is a recipe for giving up to me. Unless it is a business - then 1200 is fine as they would get sold before they would need repotting.

Yeah, some people do have that many, surprisingly. A good way to meet these people is by joining an orchid society. These collectors are the ones that make a few trips with their van to bring all the blooming orchids to orchid shows! :O

Around 200-250.
They all grow outside or in small shadehouses, but a few get bought inside in winter.

BTW: that’s about 100 too many for me. My eventual aim is to cut the number down to about half, but all to be big old specimen plants. For this reason I don’t divide.

My original plan was to first acquire the orchids that I most wished to acquire ...... just for looking at their appealing flowers (when they bloom that is) at home.

But like most growers, some become more heheheh.

So my second plan was to acquire a reasonable number of orchids that I could still look after properly - taking into account time and effort etc - where at least there's a good chance to see some flowers every once in a while through-out the year.

I'm not sure what the minimum number is ----- for good chance of seeing flowers every once in a while throughout the year. That depends on what sort of orchids there are in the collection, how big they are, and things like that. Maybe 20 orchids or even 30 might do the trick.

I think that regardless of whether we grow 1 orchid or many many orchids, the extremely nice thing is that we're here together to share the experiences ------ growing techniques, photos of the orchid flowers and the plants, and lots of other aspects involving orchids. Interestingly, I think OrchidBoard is like a unique orchid in itself. I think OrchidBoard is something rare and special in itself.

I can relate to that. As I bring orchids inside when they flower one of my original goals was to have at least one orchids in flower on every day of the year - so there’s always something brightening the house up.

The last couple of years not a problem, though I do have to rely on phals in midwinter and hybrids with a lot of Miltonopsis in them for late summer.

Really, though, my flowering hit rate is surprisingly low, which I think is due to the fact I can’t give them the light they need. I’m good at growing dark green leaves.

Only 18. That's about my max, based on the available space. I could maybe squeeze one or two more in, but they would have to be something really special that I have wanted for a long time.
