Peristeria elata

I have a Peristeria elata on the way. I am looking for growing suggestions, I live in SW Florida and this orchid will be living outside on a lanai.

Best advice is to find a botanical garden or conservatory near you that grows that species successfully, and find out how they grow them. The plants need to become quite large before they can bloom. Not really a beginner's plant.

Are you in a frost-free part of Florida? If not, you need to plan on moving a quite large plant into shelter whenever cold weather threatens.

Your environment have high humidity all year round....this orchid plant needs frosty winters in direct sun during its rest period and I think your area has two weeks of cold in winter which will be good for this orchid.

I live in SW Florida. Sunny, humid, hot. Winter is normally very short. I have had success with several varieties and have been wanting to try this for a long time. I can provide just about any conditions, except freezing cold. I have plenty of space so large growth would be very cool. The information available is limited to generalities, so Bud your experiences would be wonderful to hear. Thanks to all

This plant definitely does not need frosty temperatures. In fact, your article says you don't give it temps below the 60's.

Thanks for that! I had always thought it was a warm grower (as well as a large plant) and so have avoided it because GH space is tight. Bud's comment had me wondering if I had missed something, since I'm always willing to push the envelope. So I'll continue to save my GH space (and money) - the Baker culture sheet in Orchidwiz lists extremes in habitat as min. 63 deg F (17 deg C), with high of 94 deg F (34 deg C) but certainly could handle a little higher, as a relatively low-light plant. Certainly a warm grower.
