Pollination Problems

Has anyone had this same issue? Both bloomed at the same time and the pollinia was fresh. This was attempted three times with the same results. Genetic issues?

Two Phalaenopsis plants "A" and "B"

Orchid "A" (Big Lip Hybrid)
1. Self-pollination "A" to "A" - successful
2. Pollinia from "B" to "A" - not successful

Orchid "B" (Non Hybrid)
1. Self-pollination "B" to "B" - successful
2. Pollinia from "A" to "B" - successful

1)Pollination may be successful but it's seed germination that counts
2)it's possible to get a seed capsule to develop ( see 1) on a 2n/4n to 3n but not vice-versa
3) other issues - age of flower as one. A breeder in the past referred time of day and moon phases as factors. It may be that one of the flowers in the proposed cross matured faster than the pollinated flower...


I developed an intergeneric which is infertile when selfed or back- crossed with another hybrid in the same genus as either of the original parents. It currently is holding a pod because I reperformed the original cross , but with different clones of the parents. I'm curious to find out if seeds eventually germinate.

No, some can take pollen and have subsequent seeds germinate. It's the pollen of the 3N plant that is generally accepted as sterile.
