Also, can moderators block or ban an account (which would effectively close it)? I would think the OP would first want to make the notification changes recommended above.

As owner of OB, yes Marty can do anything on the forum. But he's so busy with his business that he is not very responsive on OB, thus my suggestion to contact other admins.
I have the power to ban users, but I don't see how that would be any different from the OP disactivating notifications, other than him not being able to access his account at all. A hard ban would delete all his posts, but then we're stuck with a few threads that make no sense because of the missing posts...
I'm just a bit confused why he wants to be deleted entirely, it's the first time I've seen such a request in all my years on OB.

...and I am a bit confused by the response to my suggestion. I thought I was relaying the proper information.
One does not "subscribe" to a website, unless it is a pay-for-use setup, which this is not. One simply points their browser there on not.
If threads have been subscribed to, then you cancel those subscription via the User CP.
Done.

I look at this in a more direct manner. The op wants gone. He isn't likely to raise a fuss over how it happens. His footprint here is miniscule. In your position Id rather ban him and worry about a confusing thread or two than worry about why he wants what he wants. Give it to him and save your worrying for things that matter. Like your orchids!

True, it's not like he was a user with hundreds or thousands of posts who wanted to be deleted. If that's what he wants, a hard ban is something that can be done easily and quickly, but I'd prefer that he confirm with me that it is really what he wants. Probably best to send him a PM...

I know the problem from an other forum; you would think if you subscribe you can unsubscribe, but no, you can't by yourself, and if the admin doesn't want to, you are hanged.
So I had to delete one by one every entry as far as I could, every image as far as I could and at least I got my nick 'deleted'. This way -and only because I had to go that way - I left a lot of threads 'broken', with empty posts and replies to nothing.
No need to explain why. There are many good reasons for it. I still think, if you want to leave, you should be allowed to leave. If not, it feels like a sect. Doors wide open to enter and no escape.
A ban is something completely different. You usually get banned if you have done wrong.
That is not the case when you politely ask to unsubscribe your account.

I often wish that I could delete old threads I started. It kills me to see threads I started about an irreplaceable orchid I loved that the dog later shredded to bits. So painful....
