I think we'll find there is a greater number of members that can keep their orchids outdoors for a longer period of time each year then some others can.
Other then those with nicely fitted basements or greenhouses many folks living in the cooler parts of the world are probably limited in the numbers of orchids they have in their collections.
That aside, how we are able to grow, or the numbers we have, or what the average annual temperature is has little to do with personal privacy.
This thread is a great idea.
I saw another discussion on this very same topic on a random search, putting our locations..not requiring it.
But I bet'cha not many new members are aware that they can add their location in their profiles!
I know I didn't think about it right away when I joined.
So this discussion will be helpful and I bet we'll see new and newer members add locations to their profiles.
But to be "required" or "forced"...?
That's a line we, as a group or as a site, should never cross!
And there's a possibility it would break the site's agreement with it's server.

OH....and speaking of privacy issues.
How many members 'check' the "Use Invisible Mode" in their profiles?
When I look to see who's online it looks like A LOT are using this option.
Isn't that a personal choice concerning an individual's privacy?

USDA hardiness zones have NOTHING to do with orchid growing. Those zones communicate the "average annual extreme minimum temperature".
Mine is 0-5F. That has no bearing on my orchid growing, or when I can put my plants out, if I so choose.

I think it should always be optional whether people want to reveal their location or not. I do because when I give advice, people can see that I am growing in Ohio and not Southern California or Florida...a big difference. I always try to tell people whether I am growing the orchid under lights or not, too, during the winter. It puts my advice in perspective.

Thanks everyone for you input, and certainly chuck for your involved insight!
I'm a pretty private person myself, yet seems like so many are on facebook, instagram, tweet, online video games, online forums usually multiple that it's questionable whether anyone cares about online privacy!... but of course there are undoubtedly many that do and I'm with them so makes total sense to not be mandatory... interesting note that many are on here in invisible mode... again I get it, but don't... not sure why you'd have to be private on here of all places, but it's not for me to get certainly, it's their business...
so ok, shouldn't be required, totally cool, but definitely members should understand the added benefit of letting others know where they are:
-definitely aids in how others can help them with issues
-definitely helps all of us know what/where we grow things, etc. in the big picture way
-While many grow indoors, under lights, I think that many still don't... it seems many are growing in windows and placing plants outside for spring/summer... daylight hours are absolutely important in understanding how to navigate growing plants indoors if at windows and seasonally outdoors... furthermore when space eventually gets crowded, absolutely indoor growers eventually have to take things outdoors in spring/ summer
-And in out of the way way, minimum temps do affect summer and winter indoor temps, especially for those of us without resources to have a completely conditions controlled house interior...
-Also, knowing location can help in understanding water quality of the tap water source.
-Also, it can help in local vendors and shows and societies and material suppliers and other groups.

I don't care if you put the info in your profile. Just let us know what your conditions are when asking for help:
• Window sill, outdoors, greenhouse, kitchen table, office desk, toilet tank
• Max temps, min temps, seasonal average temps, RH if you know
• Under lights, east/west/north/south window, fc/par if you know
• potting media
All the respondents here know what's wanted. We'll ask, otherwise, how do noobs know?

Isn't there a 'sticky' requesting that information somewhere on here, for noobs to read before they post?
Oh wait....noobs don't read those "Before You Post" posts on any website.
Never mind.
There's only one perfect world..and it's the one we dream about.

One of the regular "welcome" greeters could post an outline for "request help" posts. Heck, the board could create an official "Welcome" FAQ post that an official "Greeter" posts in every introduction thread. (That should take care of 50% of noobs.)

To update your profile, scroll way up to the top maroon menu bar. At the left is User CP. Click that. Notice there are many tabs here and there, where different stuff is stored.
