Afaict the underlying issue is that the orchidboard software does not recognize or use the orientation information that is stored in the image file (the "Orientation" metadata field), not that it is missing.
All or most modern phones and cameras store pixels from the sensor in the image file in a fixed order, regardless of picture orientation, then set "Orientation" as a hint. The value indicates which sides of the image file should be at the top and left when displayed, for instance the value for a regular landscape photo will be "TopLeft", while a portrait picture might be "RightTop" or "LeftBottom", depending on which way the phone/camera was tilted. orchidboard just treats every image as "TopLeft".
Fixing an image requires that the software actually rewrite all the pixels so that they are in "TopLeft" order; what can make that happen is probably different on each editing software. As an example, ImageMagick can do this from the command line:
magick portrait.jpg -rotate 90 fixed.jpg
... where the resulting fixed.jpg will show properly on orchidboard. The rotation might need to be 270 depending on whether the camera was tilted left or right when taking the picture.
===
An edit to clarify that the symbolic values such as "TopLeft" are actually stored in the image as a numeric exif orientation number from 1-8

But there's a possible catch...I used to post photos via Photobucket but a few years ago all the photos were gone. I don't know what happened but I think only subscribers are now allowed to use it freely.

Did you exclusively store your photos on Photobucket? That would be sad. I'll just upload to PostImage the photo(s) that I want to post for a given message with a one-day delete. All of my photos are stored on my own hard drives. Cloud backup, but I don't depend on it.

What operating system are you using? What image processing software? I don't think it works on any phone, only a desktop/laptop.

For desktop, Irfanview is a really nice little free (for personal use) program that does seem to work to "right" photos, and also has some very robust editing capabilitites too. Just do a "save as" and I don't even think you have to to the "flipping". (I run all my pix through Photoshop, do cropping and such, and that does the job too)

They're taken with iPhone. But when they're saved on my laptop they become jpegs. Nothing strange.
Trying to thing like the software... it seems to be insisting on "landscape" format. Dunno, grasping at straws here. I used to take all my photos with my Canon SLR. Maybe something wonky with Apple photos? That wouldn't surprise me. They're so proprietary.
Oh well. Another day, another effort.

Problem is with phone photos (I think all of them). It's the processing on the desktop that seems to reset the metadata that tells the OB software (such as it is) which way is up. Another hint... try renaming the file to .jpg while you're messing with it generally. (That's another little wrinkle... I had to explicitly tell my PC that .jpeg was to be treated the same as .jpg.) Apple definitely doesn't follow standards, I do run into idiosyncrasies in other areas too. (Pretty much, it doesn't play nice with other products...marketing I guess)
