Roberta ----- a dedicated processing software (at home or on the phone/tablet/computer) can operate on the files provided to it, and it can then automatically generate output file(s) having the 'desired' orientation. The software just reads the orientation details, and can just correct the orientation automatically. This reduces the amount of effort/time - as compared with needing to manually go in there to rotate images.

Attached is a screenshot of results of the output of a short piece of computer script code. Before using that computer script, I put jpg files I want to process into a directory.

After I hit 'run', the program script just automatically goes through the whole list of jpg files (that it detects in that directory) ----- and it not only tells you which way each detected image is oriented, but can also automatically generate a new correctly-oriented image and automatically save it to the same directory under a new name (eg. original file might be "123.jpg", and the corrected file will be "123_corr.jpg"). Any original file that doesn't require a correction on the rotation will be automatically ignored.

UPDATE : just converted the program so that it only requires a single (executable) file to run.

My program click here (which is totally safe to use ----- as in no nasties in there --- it is 100% clean, guaranteed) --- runs on my windows 8 machine, but probably runs on other modern MS windows operating systems too. The zip file password is: 123

Google Drive comes up with a "FALSE-positive" for virus detection ----- which misleads people into thinking there is an issue.

If we put the executable file through some excellent virus checkers - such as the very well-known online virus-checker called VirusTotal, then it becomes obvious that this software is clean.

How to use this orientation auto-correcting program?

Basically, I just put a few .jpg files into an empty directory (yes - .jpg files only), then I just use the mouse (eg. double-click) to run the "readexif4.exe" file.

A pop-up window will then come up. And then you use that pop-up window to navigate over to the directory with your images (to be processed), and then click on the 'select folder' button. And the processing begins.

It will not alter the original jpg image files. It will just automatically take a look at each image file - and if the image is 'wrongly' oriented, it will generate a new output file having the same base name, but will append a 'corr' (corrected) to the filename.

For example, a file '123.jpg' that needs to have the rotation fixed up will lead to another file being automatically produced, called '123_corr.jpg'.

Some image files might not contain any exif information, and might not contain any orientation information. This program will just ignore files that are found to not contain the orientation information.

It works for my samsung phone jpg files. I haven't tested it for ipad/apple jpg files. It probably works on those files too - transferred to an MS Windows machine that is.

Anybody is welcome to use this program. It is very easy to use.

You're most welcome Brownie. I just noticed a moment ago that Google Drive unlinked my program link due to the 'false-positive' detection. Maybe ok now though.

What I've done is to see what happens if I put a password on the zip file (ie. password is 123) - purely for purposes of getting around the issue of the false positive detection. The issue was their robot virus checker is only that - a currently unsophisticated robot. This particular robot isn't smart enough to know that it came up with a false-positive detection. Putting a password on the zip file might overcome the problem here. Will see!

Also, if anybody wants to be 100% safe (even though I've guaranteed absolutely no issues) ----- then they could easily test out the software in a virtual environment, such as with the well-known (and free) SandBoxie.

Interestingly - this person here encountered the same issue in 2019. If I had seen that post at that time, then I would have helped him out. He probably sorted things out in the end too.

I have found a fairly simple way of posting photos to the board and the orientation is correct. I use a website called Postimages — free image hosting / image upload to upload my photos. Once it has been uploaded, scroll down and choose the copy button for the "hotlink for forums". Paste this into your message where you want your photo to appear. It works for me on both my PC and my phone.

Does anyone know why when I upload a photo they are sometimes upside down? Is there a way to avoid this?

It's a forum 'feature'! Kiddding aside, it's a bug in the software that is here to stay since we are not getting any updates/upgrades.

We've gotten used to it over time, but if you really want to have correctly oriented photos, the 'easiest' is to open the photo in a photo editor (the built in one on mac or pc works fine, never tried on a phone), and either rotate it 360 then save, or rotate it once>save>rotate it back>save again. That 'resets' the orientation data in the photo and the forum can then read it correctly.

Alternatively, try one of the suggestions in recent posts in this thread.

Thanks. I'll give it a try but it will be on my phone or tablet since I've regressed from owning a real pc.
